NEET 2026 Tie-Breaking Rules
When two or more candidates score the same total marks in NEET 2026, the following tie-breaking criteria are applied in order to determine who gets the higher rank. These rules are applied sequentially - if the tie is resolved at any step, subsequent criteria are not used.
Higher Marks in Biology
The candidate who has obtained higher marks in Biology (Botany + Zoology combined) will be given preference. This is the first and most important tie-breaking criterion.
Higher Marks in Chemistry
If the tie persists after comparing Biology marks, the candidate with higher marks in Chemistry will be given preference.
Fewer Wrong Answers
If the tie still persists, the candidate with fewer incorrect (wrong) answers across all subjects will be given preference. This is calculated based on the total number of wrong responses in the OMR sheet.
Older Candidate Gets Preference
If the tie remains unresolved after all the above criteria, the older candidate (based on date of birth) will be given a higher rank. The candidate born earlier gets preference.
Key Takeaway: Biology marks are the most important tie-breaker. If you are scoring the same as competitors, strong Biology performance can give you an edge in ranking. Focus on maximizing your Biology score.
Answer Key Challenge Process
NTA releases the provisional answer key before declaring the result. Candidates can challenge answers they believe are incorrect. Here is the complete process:
Download Provisional Answer Key
After the exam, NTA releases the provisional answer key on neet.nta.nic.in. Download it and compare your responses with the key.
Identify Questions to Challenge

Pay Challenge Fee
A non-refundable fee of Rs 200 per question must be paid online for each challenge submitted. If your challenge is accepted, the fee will be refunded.
Expert Review & Final Key
NTA constitutes a panel of subject matter experts to review all challenges. Based on their review, the final answer key is prepared and used for result computation.
Challenge Fee
Rs 200 per question (non-refundable). If the challenge is accepted and the answer key is revised, the fee is refunded to the candidate.
Challenge Window
Typically 2-3 days from the date of release of the provisional answer key. Challenges submitted after the deadline will not be accepted.

Frequently Asked Questions - NEET 2026 Result
Q1. When will the NEET 2026 result be declared?
The NEET 2026 result is expected to be declared in mid-June 2026, approximately 4-6 weeks after the exam date (May 3, 2026). NTA will announce the exact date on the official website neet.nta.nic.in.
Q2. What details are needed to check the NEET 2026 result?
To check the NEET 2026 result, you need your Application Number and Date of Birth. Some portals may also ask for a security pin or captcha. Keep your application form details handy.
Q3. How is the NEET percentile calculated?
NEET percentile is calculated using the formula: Percentile = (100 x Number of candidates who scored equal to or less than the candidate) / Total number of candidates who appeared. A 50th percentile means the candidate scored more than 50% of the total test-takers.
Q4. Can I get admission if I score just above the cutoff?
Qualifying NEET means you are eligible for counselling, but getting admission depends on your rank and the number of seats available. Candidates with scores just above the cutoff typically need to apply for private medical colleges or management quota seats. Government college admissions usually require much higher scores.
Q5. What if I am not satisfied with my NEET result?
You can apply for re-evaluation/re-checking if NTA provides such an option (which is rare for NEET). Alternatively, you can challenge the answer key during the challenge window before the result is declared. If you believe there is a discrepancy, you can approach the courts, though this is unusual.
Q6. Is the NEET scorecard valid for more than one year?
The NEET scorecard is typically valid for one admission cycle (the year it is issued). If you do not get admission in the current year, you will need to appear for NEET again in the subsequent year.
Q7. What is the difference between AIR (All India Rank) and State Rank?
All India Rank (AIR) is the overall rank among all NEET test-takers across India and is used for AIQ counselling (15% seats). State Rank is determined by the respective state counselling authority based on domicile and is used for state quota counselling (85% seats).
Q8. How many marks are needed for a government medical college?
For government medical colleges under AIQ, candidates typically need 550+ marks (General category) for top colleges and 450+ marks for newer/regional government colleges. Under state quota, the cutoff varies significantly by state. SC/ST/OBC candidates may get seats at lower marks depending on reservation policies.
