How NEET Counselling Works — Step by Step

After NEET results are declared, the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) conducts centralized online counselling for 15% All India Quota seats, all Deemed/Central University seats, and ESIC/AFMC seats. Simultaneously, state counselling authorities conduct counselling for 85% State Quota seats. Here is the step-by-step process:

1

Registration & Fee Payment

Register on mcc.nic.in portal. Pay non-refundable registration fee and refundable security deposit online.

2

Choice Filling & Locking

Select colleges and courses in order of preference. You can add, remove, or reorder choices until the deadline. Lock your choices before last date (auto-locked if not done manually).

3

Seat Allotment (Processing)

MCC processes allotment based on NEET rank, category, preferences, and seat availability using an algorithm.

4

Result & Reporting

Check allotment result on portal. Report to allotted college within the given timeframe with all original documents.

5

Join / Float / Resign

Join: Accept the seat and stay. Float: Keep the seat but participate in next round for upgradation. Resign: Give up the seat (security deposit may be forfeited in later rounds).

Expert Tips for NEET Counselling 2026

Register on both MCC (for AIQ) and your state counselling portal simultaneously to maximize chances.
Fill maximum number of choices — don't restrict yourself to just a few colleges. More choices = higher chance of allotment.
Research colleges thoroughly before choice filling. Check infrastructure, faculty, hospital attachment, and placements.
Keep all original documents ready well before counselling starts. Missing even one document can lead to rejection.
Understand the difference between Join, Float, and Resign options clearly before making a decision.
If you get a seat in Round 1 but want a better college, choose 'Float' — you keep current seat while waiting for upgrade.
Monitor state counselling dates carefully — they differ from MCC schedule and may have tight deadlines.
Keep digital copies of all documents on your phone/email as backup during physical verification.
Check if your OBC-NCL certificate is valid for central counselling (must be in central list, not just state list).
EWS certificate must be issued for the current financial year — older certificates are not accepted.
